TCAT Mentor Day
On the 2nd Dec 2022 Penketh High School welcomed a group of pupils from Priestley College to our first TCAT Mentor day. This was a huge success and pupils from both Penketh High and Priestley College commented on how impactful the day was for them.
At Penketh High School pupils focus on developing a set of wider skills linked to our Dual Curriculum.
The purpose of the Dual Curriculum programme is to overtly teach fundamental and foundation skills that support pupil’s wider development, and their preparedness for the modern world and their academic development within all areas of school. Pupils are provided with a framework to help to support them develop in each of the skills. They have the opportunity to advance through 4 areas to achieve mastery;
- Beginner
- Intermediate
- Advanced
- Mastery
The mentor day allowed Penketh pupils to discuss their progress through the framework with their mentor from Priestley College. Pupils in Year 7-10 were able to spend valuable time discussing where they currently are on the framework and what they could to do to progress. The Priestley Mentor was able to verify pupils advancement and have the opportunity to support and guide pupils in how they can develop individual skills. The Priestley mentors also spent time discussing key aspects of college life, and answering questions about further study after High School. There was a real buzz in the sports hall for the entire day! We asked some pupils in year 7-10 what they have gained from the experience, here are just some of the responses ‘I loved finding out more about College life, it has definitely made me want to go to College’ , ‘My Mentor was really friendly and helped to think about how I can improve on these important skills, she also explained how I will use them in College.’, ‘The opportunity meant I could test my own reasoning for where I rank myself on the framework and see my own personal strengths and areas I could improve on, ‘I can’t wait for the next one!’. We look forward to welcoming the Priestley mentors later in the school year where they will meet with their mentees again.
